Natalia In Stone

The progression of our movement through the SAM Olympic Sculpture Park was natural. Natalia Rudovsky & I followed intuition, our inspiration for reflecting humanity's imitation of the great Mother Nature. Patterns and designs, angles and lines, whether straight, narrow and rigid; or curving, wide and spacious - we frolicked in this realm and kept creating, visualizing and expanding an awareness.

I feel the practices of yoga and photography align quite well to the science of breaking open the rational mind to explore the infinite. And thus, with the cold unseasonable Thursday morning, both of us broke into new rhythms and stretched beyond our bodies.

The Art Form of Natalia's Practice

From Wake and its curvaceous forms of metal, rust and fluidity, Natalia Rudovsky & I moved onto an infamous sculpture. Eagle, created by Alexander Calder, is the notorious image of the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park. Formed like an animal in pose, the painted red metal art piece stands tall and poignant like an eagle at canopy.

We set up upon the lines of artistry and found a linear path of red chairs along the walkway. Natalia struck an upward dog as I framed the image of animal in man, the instinct of woman, the earthliness of humanity, ready to devour its prey, aligned to its Higher Self inorder to overcome this superficial bondage.

In the words of the artist, Alexander Calder:
"How does art come into being? Out of volumes, motion, spaces carved out within the surrounding space, the universe."
We are the Universal rhythms. We are the creators of our world, attaining the liberation of an eagle in flight.

The Sculpting of Natalia Rudovsky

Oh, the joy of working & playing & yoging & photographing with awesome people! Natalia Rudovsky met me in the early morning during an unseasonably windy day. Clouds and cold crept through my bones, yet here she was willing and excited to stretch, move, glide and flow around the designs of the SAM Sculpture Park.

Starting with a warm-up to get an idea of Natalia's practice, Sun Salutations where given to the great hidden star of our galaxy. Then, with a clear picture in my head and through my eyes, her body warm to her fluidity, we swan through Wake by Richard Serra.

What I strive for in my imagery is a composition of lines and angles, matching/mimicking/contradicting the symmetry of Nature and mankind. The curvaceous metals of Serra's pieces offered something new, something unique. I utilized the deep primordial maroon as a background and the play of light between the sculptures as a source of piecemeal lighting. Richard Serra quotes our process, performance and presence there beautifully:
"What's important is you moving between them, through them, and around them as they undulate; it's your body moving in relation to their surface that moves."
Onward and upward to the bounds of infinite growth and creativity.

Frances Behind the Yoga Bars of Asana

The early Saturday morning of the shoot was bright and sunny. I rode my bike down Queen Anne, across the spread of a sleepy metropolis dreary from its night's consumption, and gathered a new energy to top Capitol Hill. Under the great blue sky of a Pacific Northwest spring, I met Frances Hammond (in Balinese: Franzipani) & spent two hours wandering Volunteer Park amidst its eclectic array of rhododendrons, grasses, camels and varying architecture.

Despite the warmth of the morning and the brilliant cloudless blue stretching above us and beyond, the dark cavernous brick tower at the park's entrance enthralled me and led us far into an eerie medieval dungeon. As if Rapunzel, cascading her blonde hair out to her awaiting Prince Charming, Yogini Frances distended her limbs and joints to the heavens in ardent devotion while I moved around the barred windows that projected a palate of sensuous shadow-play. Neither of us were saved by a Prince (Thank God...), we just walked down the steps into the clear ether of the morn; I hopped on my trusty Green Steed for a downhill race with metal & asphalt while Frances boarded the public carriageway to travel into and out of the cityscape.
